Abnormal uterine bleeding
Can be related to pregnancy or not. Is common for women at all ages of their life and can be due to hormonal changes, fibroids, polyps, cancers. It is easy to work out the reason for bleeding with the examination, ultrasound and sometimes hysteroscopy (a camera looking inside of the uterus) and choose the best treatment.

Is a condition where the tissue that is part of the lining of the womb grows outside of the womb onto the tummy, the ovaries, and other areas. Endometriosis is usually diagnosed on laparoscopy (an operation that involves looking with the camera inside of the tummy) and treated with hormones or surgery.

Fibroids, polyps
Are growth in the uterus which are usually not cancerous but often cause problems with bleeding, difficulties falling pregnant or recurrent miscarriages. Fibroids and polyps are diagnosed on examination, ultrasound and hysteroscopy. If they need to be treated they are usually removed surgically though there are non-surgical treatments too.

Is leaking urine or wind or faeces. In other words, incontinence is having no control over bladder or bowel function. There are different types of incontinence (leaking urine with cough or laugh is stress incontinence which usually needs surgery such as sling procedure; leaking urine accidentally when there is strong urge to pass urine is called urgency and usually treated with tablets). There are many other types of incontinence, which are treated differently.

Pap smear abnormalities
Are suggestive of pre-cancer or rarely cancer of the cervix and need further assessment with colposcopy (looking at the cervix with “a big microscope”) and treatment (excising the abnormal cells picked by Pap smear and seen with colposcopy).

Pelvic floor prolapse
Is a condition where the bladder wall at the front or the bowel at the back or uterus in the middle slips down into the vagina and even outside of the vagina. Women might feel “a ball” or fullness in the vagina, experience backache, painful intercourse, problems passing urine. Childbirth, obesity, smoking, chronic cough, having a hysterectomy, constipation and getting older all predispose to the development of prolapse. There are various treatments for this condition that are tailored depending on the type of prolapse, age of the woman, her reproductive wishes. The treatment includes pelvic floor exercise, surgery, pessary.
